Mixed reality (MR) is the merging of real and virtual worlds, creating a more complex form of augmented reality. The term Mixed reality is often used to describe Microsoft’s HoloLens, Meta Smartglasses and Magic Leap’s project. The concept is in a state of flux and may eventually disappear in a simple split between AR and VR. But at the moment, it is still useful to label an environment that is more than a digital overlay of information, but not a fully immersive environment.
Mixed Reality Applications
As Microsoft continues development, we have seen HoloLens use in retail, especially at Lowe’s Stores. It has the advantage of customers not being isolated from retail surroundings. It has been adopted by NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to help with navigation of the Martian rover. As for education, it is used in both STEM and Medical learning environments. We suspect it will spread far beyond those areas in the near future.
