Mixed Reality

Mixed Reality (MR) merges real and virtual worlds into a more complex form of augmented reality. It’s the convergence of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and the Internet of Things (IoT), creating a complex environment where digital objects intersect with the real world.  Mixed Reality is often used to describe the experience found in Microsoft’s HoloLens and Magic Leap’s Magic Leap One HMD. While Mixed Reality devices are used in STEM and Medical education environments, the recent transition to enterprise applications has changed the focus of the technology. However, there remain highly creative uses of Mixed Reality, from artists at film festivals to NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory using HoloLens 2 to help with navigation of the Mars Rover.

AR? VR? XR?

There are multiple terms covering the broad spectrum of immersive technologies from AR, which superimposes data and images on the user’s space to VR, which is a digitally simulated immersive environment where users can look, move around, or interact with virtual space or objects. Mixed Reality (MR) is a hybrid of the physical and the virtual that feels more immersive than AR since digital entities can be occluded by objects in the real world. And then there is XR (or Extended Reality), which is an umbrella concept covering augmented, mixed, and virtual reality. XR does not refer to specific technologies but the entire category of immersive technologies that extend and enhance human experience.
