SXSW 2023: The Complex Future of Human-Avatar Interaction

Join us at SXSW 2023 as we explore the future of human-avatar interaction. Our SXSW 2023 session proposal, “Future Challenges in Human-Avatar Interaction,” will examine how the coming development of realistic avatars will impact human behavior in the real world. Avatars are more than simple representations of ourselves. They shape our identity and behavior, and how we relate to others.

Community input is an important part of the selection process – please support our proposal!

SXSW2023: The Complex Future of Human-Avatar Interaction

human-avatar interaction.

Proposal description

The global pandemic opened a doorway to the future, pushing us to connect, work, and learn through virtual worlds. But we’ve yet to fathom the complex psychology of human-avatar interaction and how it transforms our online and offline behavior. Exploring this issue from our work with universities, NGOs, and workforce training projects, we’ll examine passivity, aggression, and the Proteus Effect on offline behavior to understand our future lives as human and AI-driven avatars in virtual worlds.

Key Objectives

  1. Gain insights into the research and studies on avatar representation in virtual worlds and its impact on human behavior.
  2. Examine cutting-edge projects from universities, NGOs, and workforce training on conflict-resolution, climate change, and cross-cultural understanding.
  3. Understand the promises and perils of a world where virtual avatars bleed into our real-life experience.
