Join us at the ShapingEDU Unconference Session on XR, Deepfakes, and Gamification

Join us virtually at the 2021 ShapingEDU Unconference on July 20-23, 2021, where we address the challenges of XR, Deepfakes, and Gamified Experiences. The conference addresses a looming set of “wicked problems” (challenges with underlying competing values), including learning in the face of disruption, ethics and bias in data, student voice in education journeys, and more. Our session is titled: Brainscan 2021: XR, Deepfakes, and Gamified Experiences.

These are working sessions – not just virtual presentations – so it’s your opportunity to get involved and share your concerns and solutions to the challenges education faces in the future. The conference is free, and you can register at the ASU ShapingEDU site.

Our ShapingEDU Unconference Sessions

ShapingEDU Unconference Working Sessions - Brain-computer Interface, XR and Deepfakes.

There’s much going on at the ShapingEDU Unconference on the 20th and 21st; the working sessions take place on the 22nd and 23rd and focus on a set of wicked problems identified by the global ShapingEDU community.

Here are the details for our sessions on XR, Deepfakes, and Gamified Experiences.

Date/Time:

Thursday, July 22nd, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PDT

Friday, July 23rd, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PDT

Description:

How will immersive VR/AR change the way we learn and teach? Will employers accept practical application skills acquired via VR as a substitute for field experience? As gamification becomes more widely recognized as an interactive resource to turn lectures into engaging video games, how can we balance this with real world application? What do AI-generated synthetic media (deepfakes) mean for the future of education? Can deepfakes accelerate the accessibility quest to improve equity?

Known all together as extended reality (XR), virtual, augmented and mixed reality are enhancing the ways we teach and how our students learn. Let’s analyze the opportunities and complexities of these tools with an eye toward how we can effectively integrate XR into learning experiences.

Format of the ShapingEDU Working Sessions

In hosting the Wicked Problems Working Sessions, the ShapingEDU Unconference is looking for solutions from you. Over the two days, we’ll explore the challenges and identify actionable outputs that educators and others will be able to draw upon as a resource.

Thursday, July 22, 2021

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time

On day 3, we will engage in working sessions focused on a set of wicked problems identified by the global ShapingEDU community.

Friday, July 23, 2021

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time

On day 4, we’ll continue our collaborative work to develop actionable outputs, resources, and products related to our set of wicked problems.

The Future of Learning – XR, AI, and Ethics

As we move rapidly into the future, our XR experiences will become increasingly real and ubiquitous. Today, we are glued to our smartphones, but tomorrow it will be our smartglasses. Our augmented and virtual lives will transform the world in ways we can barely imagine – reshaping how we learn, work, and connect with each other. The opportunities for education are breathtaking, as are the challenges we will face once any experience can be virtual, faked, or gamified. We’ve laid the groundwork to address some of these issues in our Humersive Learning project for the ShapingEDU community, but now it’s time to confront the “wicked problems” and identify solutions.

Join us on July 22nd and 23rd at the ShapingEDU Unconference and help shape the future of learning!
