SXSW 2022: Mirrors of the Soul
XR continues its rapid development, and the global pandemic has served as a catalyst to explore immersive multiuser environments. But these virtual worlds with their cartoon-like avatars are primitive examples of virtual worlds in the future. The convergence of different technologies, especially XR and AI, will lead to avatars that are not only lifelike but respond to you with human gestures and speech. Magic Leap’s Mica and Sensorium’s new digital avatars are just a distant glimpse of how we will live in the future.
Here’s the description of our proposal for SXSW 2022: Mirrors of the Soul – Avatar Psychology:
The global pandemic opened a doorway to the future, pushing us to explore new opportunities to connect through virtual worlds. But we’ve yet to fathom the complex psychology of avatar representation and how they transform our online and offline behavior. Examining this issue from multiple perspectives in working with universities, NGOs, and workforce training, we’ll examine avatar aggression, passivity, and the Proteus Effect on offline behavior to explore our future lives as virtual beings.

In the end, it’s never about the technology, but about living in a human world. And that will get exponentially more complicated as we interact with replicas of ourselves.
